Used / Her Output:
Jenny was allowed to choose any book she wanted, and was told that she
would have to retell the story in writing to the best of her ability.
She chose one from the Ramona series and read the first chapter. She
was allowed to use pictures as well as text to retell the events.
She wrote three lines which dealt with the emotions of the characters,
stopped mid sentence and drew a picture of a heart.
I liked the fact that she could tune into the emotions of the
characters to a certain degree. However it was not exactly what she was asked to
do. She also did not demonstrate an understanding of the text through her
drawing.
In another retelling assessment, Jenny watched a demonstration of oral hygiene
and was to describe what happened and what she learned.
She turned in someone else's paper the next day with their name
scratched off and her's written in its place. It is noteworthy that the
demonstration was conducted in Jenny's second language (she is at best an
intermediate beginner).
During daily read-aloud periods Jenny often is the first to
offer a story retell, or answer comprehension questions pertaining to the story.
Her listening comprehension significantly (disproportionately) outpaces her
reading comprehension.
