Literacy Portfolio

Final Summary:

It has been a pleasure working on this project with a student such as Jenny. She is an optimistic, hard working young lady. Her willingness to listen to new ideas and try different strategies is one of her biggest assets. In informal interviews with her mother, Jenny has been knocked around both academically and socially. Her resilience is noteworthy, this girl doesn't give up.

Her ability to take risks <frame 1> needs to be utilized. She is becoming knowledgeable about butterflies through her reading <frame 2>. Jenny understands what kind of book she needs to become successful, and how to discern between those inside and outside of her zone of proximal development <frame 3>.  Jenny recognizes, when asked to reflect on her literacy, her areas of need and her internal reading choice rationale <frame 4>. Quite often Jenny arrives home from school and finds a note on the door with instructions as to what she should do until her mother gets home <frame 5>.

Her needs take on many forms and could be aided in a variety of ways. Jenny needs to experience and expect success with her literacy. Eventually considering herself among the ranks of "good" writers and readers <frame 1>. Jenny needs to build up her modest pool of background knowledge both Hispanic and American (US) <frame 2>. She needs to incorporate pre, post, and midstream reading strategies as well as continuing to strengthen her book selection strategies <frame 3>. Jenny also needs to begin to reflect on her reading and writing choices and actions without the benefit of an outside stimulus <frame 4>. Jenny needs to see the impact literacy has on her life, needs to understand how reading is her ticket to other worlds and the gamut of human emotion, she needs to appreciate how her ability to express herself in the written word helps her in the world beyond her apartment complex <frame 5>.

Jenny demonstrates an extraordinary need for extra literacy development attention, she would benefit from a vast array of literacy programs and strategies. More important than which option or combination of options one employs is the presence of a long term personal literacy development plan and an understanding of how to integrate it into classroom instruction. This observer's personal recommendations are that Jenny would benefit from access to a wide selection of books and print media, daily 20+mins read alouds, 25+mins free voluntary reading time, 20+mins of shared reading or duolog reading, and 20min. mini-lessons focusing on comprehension and fluency strategies. Working with a writing team with the goal of producing fiction and non-fiction articles and diagrams and other animals may give her the chance to experience the evolutionary process of writing and by contributing to it, raise her efficacy and world knowledge.
