- Responses to Reflections on Framing Literacy 2,
Dana -
About Framing Literacy, I wanted to remark on frame 1 - self efficacy. I
really was impressed that this was the first frame; that this is what needs
to be embedded in the reader. I took this thought into my new classroom and
watched the students as they attempted to answer reading comprehension questions.
One of the students, and possibly the poorest reader in the class, has very
poor self efficacy. This student did not want to write a word until I told
him it was correct. He needs to be encouraged to take risks and not be afraid
of being wrong. Now that I see this, how do I help this student? Have any
of you been in similar situations?
-Karen
Karen- About your student with the efficacy issues, what do you think about
setting up a timed exercise where they write about something that happened
to them, set it up like a game (even telling them that today recess would
be inside...) then collect them and read a few -make sure you practice reading
the student accounts of those whose efficacy you want to boost so that you
can read it smoothly fixing little ticks...- then read that student's essay
aloud congratulating his/her work publicly. That might help him or her gain
momentum. Justin
