  • Response to Amanda Reading Workshop.

My name is Amanda and I am currently working on getting my masters and becoming a reading specialist. I am in my third year of teaching 6th grade reading at Pershing Middle School. Although I've been with the same school, grade level, and content area for three years; I must say that it is never boring. I'm constantly trying new things and learning from my mistakes. My teaching style has shifted drastically over the past three years. During my first year, the goal was to survive and the method was to give them so much work to do that they couldn't cause problems. I was incredibly bored and I know that my students were too. I have learned that I have to enjoy what we're doing, because if I don't, my students won't either. I am gradually moving towards the reading workshop approach and have been using literature circles. My biggest
struggle if figuring out how to have an effective reading workshop with 30-34 kids in the classroom. I'm hoping that by the end of this course I will be able to solve that problem.

Amanda, For me reading work shop goes best when all my students have the books they want and are interested in. Most of my kids are a little bored of the books in the school library, and my classroom library only kept them interested for the first month of school. Every 3 weeks i go to the downtown library and check out 60-80 books for use in reading work shop / Free Voluntary Reading.

You have not heard such a commotion as they scramble to pick out books on new book day, they give me a list of the TYPE (genre) of the books they want, first second third choices one author and one series name. This is great because it is like a mini Metalinguistic interest self assessment.

I think i could manage 45 kids if i had to, as long as i have good "fresh" books...

    Justin
