The Education of Exceptional Learners.    Book Report on Extraordinary People: Understanding "Idiot Savants"  by D. Treffert   1.  Setting and characters a. Savant Syndrome b. Exhibits an island of genius c. Family relationships d. Reduced language and or social functioning 2.  Instruction or treatment a. Encouragement, discouragement, roundedness b. Love PET scan, individual help,  3.  It is not possible to compartmentalize or categorize savants. There are many factors which seem to repeat themselves but there are also areas of uniqueness. Give love and the opportunity for the gift to grow. Be fascinated and believe that the talent they exhibit resides within all of us.  4.  Evaluation and Research a.  Reactions of professionals, initial fascination, then intense interest. b.  Fascination and hope are my reactions. c.  Special Ed. teachers, parents, and anyone who somehow feel superior to the rest of us.
