Notebook: 04, Debate on Value of Summer School

The latest reports show at risk kids regress the most educationally over the summer. Experts also point to the superior qualities of enrichment type summer instruction instead of remedial classes. Psychologists warn of the dangers of obligatory summer school. All of these issues converge and what’s more is the observation that rote memorization and lower order skills seem to be the first to regress whereas higher order thinking and holistic broad strategies regress much less.

This brings us to the TAAS and Texas, oh and bilingual education.

Why bilingual education? If it happens to the rest of the children, it happens to English language learners (ELL), and ELL’s have large numbers of at risk children among their ranks.

Good summer school cannot make up for poor teaching the rest of the year. Nor can it hope to accomplish in 4 weeks, what the regular classroom could not do in 30.

Texas demands we determine our educational merit through the TAAS, the aforementioned test demands we pound home lower order thinking skills. Then summer comes and you start all over, because these cognitively lower order abilities are the first to regress when kids exchange paper and pencil for Pokemon and swimming pool.
