Annotation: Although
this study did not include enough subjects to allow the forming of
generalizations, it points to some tendencies as well as the need for continued
study in the area of Hispanic parent involvement and perspectives in the
education of their preschool child with developmental disabilities. Within the
group of parents for the 18 children included in the study, 44% reported a
failure to receive crucial school correspondence in their primary language. Most
were positive about the education their children received and were passive in
voicing their desire to increase the ancillary resources available to their
children especially in the area of speech therapy. Many of the parents viewed
reading aloud as their best chance to affect their child’s academic
performance, some frustration was conveyed in not being able to aid their
children in their English language courses. Access to information about their
rights as they pertained to their child’s education could be improved.
