Article
Annotation: This article
focuses on the influence Chinese American parents and their culturally distinct
beliefs exert on their children in relation to academic performance. Chinese
culture emphasizes familial roles in the form of parental sacrifice, child
obedience and scholastic achievement through effort. Chinese American parents
have better formed / higher expectations for their children. These differences
between Chinese-American and mainstream parental philosophies diminish with each
generation. Advantages culled by children of Chinese-American birth seem to be:
heightened parental involvement and support, belief in success through effort
instead of innate ability / inability, and a high degree of financial help for
college. The disadvantages children of Chinese-American parents / heritage face
seem to be: a reduced opportunity to interact socially, less parental emphasis
on critical thinking and creativity, and linguistic boundaries caused by
diverging parent / child language of choice.
