Help for first year classroom teachers.

An example lesson plan for the first day of school.

First day schedule…

7:45 Meet and greet- kids enter room, put their things in the student closet / cubby. Students begin working on the student information sheet as others come in the room.

8:10 Collect the sheets and begin with an introduction of yourself… Who can read the first rule… Who can tell me what that means in Spanish…

8:15 Quick first look at the rules / why they are important …fire drill practice. First thing is to practice getting in line. Then to the outside of the classroom. Then back in. Then out again and to the drinking fountain / bathroom and back. Explain how the bathroom break will work. Explain where and how they will stand outside during the fire drill. Each step should be repeated until the students can do it without confusion.

8:35 Go over the rules again with a little more detail. Ask ‘why do we need this rule?’ what would happen if we didn’t have this rule?… Repeating them in both English and Spanish. Explain that there is a system to the conduct that you will explain later.

8:50 Explain that there will also be a disaster drill. What is this for?…. How are we going to / what are we going to do? Go through it again (first in line, next leaving the classroom). Third positioning themselves and assuming the position.

9:20 Take roll. Explain that someone will be in charge of taking the CAR to the office every day… that there will be many classroom jobs…

9:25 Bathroom practice. Explain how 4 students will have special jobs during their bathroom breaks. Two door holders and two people holding / giving out tp and soap. Door holder also counts and lets only a certain number of people in the bathroom (as many as there are toilets…). As they come out they may get a drink before getting back in number order. When the students get to the bathroom boys and girls to step out of line and position the boys…

10:00 Practice getting the students to their ancillary class groups. Explain the letter system. Remind them as to who has what letter… Practice getting in line. Walking out of the classroom and down the hall. Dropping off each group outside their respective door. Also explain what class each group will have for the first week.

10:20 Planning

11:14 Be waiting for class D. Drop other groups off. Have your students get in number order before going in the room.

11:15 Go over rules again.

11:30 How do we go to lunch. Explain how two people will help clean the lunchroom after eating… Get things for lunch. Get in line. Out the door. To the lunch room… Go over rules for the lunch room.
